International bhangra music artist, Jaz Dhami, is on a mission to find Britain’s next Asian football star. The singer of ‘Theke Wali’ fame, from his debut album JD that has rocked dance floors since 2009, is working for the third year with Chelsea FC to find Asian football talent.
More than 400 children and their families were present on Saturday May 26 to earn their place on a one-year placement at Chelsea FC Foundation’s Elite Training Centre. Chelsea FC’s groundbreaking search for an Asian star has attracted international media attention, with Bollywood star Abhishek Bachchan joining the throng of celebrities backing the innovative project.
Punjabi singer Jaz who is a coach himself said: “This year I’ve seen a massive progression and I’m excited to be here. There aren’t any other clubs that put these events on and it gives the youngsters a great platform from which to build. I would like to see more of it, I’ve been involved over the past three years and I’m surprised other clubs where there is a big Asian population haven’t followed suit.”
Chelsea Foundation coaches closely scrutinised the competitors, selecting the best in four age groups from Under 9s to Under 12s. This year’s winners will return to the club’s training ground later in the summer for a week-long trial.
