Bhangra Showdown issues Leicester University with 5 year ban for breaking rules

VN:F [1.9.10_1130]
Rating: 10.0/10 (7 votes cast)

Bhangra Showdown, the largest inter-university bhangra group competition in the UK, has issued students from the University of Leicester with a 5 year ban on entering the contest after three of the contestants who took part in the 2012 event were found to not be students at the university which meant they were not eligible to compete.

The Bhangra Showdown have issued an official statement in which they fully outline the situation which was presented to them when their suspicions were raised over the legitimacy of three of the Leicester University’s team members eligibility to perform in the contest.

The three Leicester group members were unable to produce valid email addresses prior to the event to prove they were students and so the group were presented with a choice, to either take a 15 point deduction, or to perform at the show as an exhibition act. However the Leicester team chose to leave all together, which the competition organisers felt was a great shame as it would have meant those who had travelled to support the team would be left disappointed.

At this point, all choreographers from the competing teams were consulted and it was agreed that Leicester would compete, however if they were unable to present evidence to show that the three questionable members of the Leicester team were in fact students by 1pm on Tuesday February 14th, then they would have 15 points deducted. The team members failed to submit proof, and consequently, their 15 points have been deducted and the University has been banned from entering the Bhangra Showdown for the next 5 years.

The competition organisers say the ban is necessary to “maintain the principles and integrity of the show” adding that “stringent identity checks” will be implemented next year to ensure ineligible contestants to do slip through the net and are allowed to compete in the competition again.

Bollywood plans day long strike to protest over new tax proposal

VN:F [1.9.10_1130]
Rating: 6.3/10 (4 votes cast)

Bollywood will come to a standstill on February 23rd as the industry is planning a complete shutdown to protest over new government proposals to levy a new service tax on the film making industry. Those who oppose the proposal say the extra tax will have a negative effect on masala.org.uk”title=”" >Indian film makers, squeezing film budgets even further.

The Bollywood strike will take place on February 23rd for the entire day, although the strike could be extended if there’s enough support for the cause. The Film Federation of India (FFI) declared the nationwide shut down, while the industry is waiting to see if the Film Producers Guild will join the strike, which would provide a big boost to the cause.

However not everyone supports the strike, filmmaker Retan Jain is one in particular who insists that the strike will only succeed in losing money for the Indian film industry. Jain believes that the best way to tackle the central government proposal to impose another tax on movies made in India is to call a meeting with the finance ministry to address the proposal head on.

Other well known faces in Bollywood support the strike whole heartedly, including Ramesh Sippy who is calling for indefinite strike to ensure the protest does not go unnoticed. Sippy believes the tax would mean an extra burden on the Indian film industry which is already the subject of heavy taxes.

Do you support the strike? Or do you think the Bollywood movie industry should pay more in tax? Let us know your thoughts in the comments box below.

Singer Diljit Dosanjh’s single 15 Saal causes women’s rights protest

VN:F [1.9.10_1130]
Rating: 7.4/10 (20 votes cast)

The singer Diljit Dosanjh is no stranger to controversy however his latest single which was leaked online, 15 Saal, is proving particularly contentious as a women’s rights group staged a march to the performer’s home to protest over the message the singer is portraying in his single.

Diljit’s new single, 15 Saal, which means 15 years in Punjabi, discusses the loss of innocence in young women and how modern teenage girls are more likely than ever to grow up too quickly and get involved in drink, drugs and boys at a young age.

While Diljit fans believe the singer has a valid point to make about the way society is changing and how this is having a negative effect in young women, others believe the Punjabi singer is portraying teenage girls in a derogatory light, which has lead to the recent protest at Diljit Dosanjh’s home.

The women’s group acting under the banner, Istri Jagriti Manch, marched to the Punjabi singer’s home last month and gathered outside the property to hold a rally. The women were protesting over Diljit’s use of indecent language and remarks towards females in his music. A member of the singer songwriter’s family came out to apologise to the women’s group.

The 28-year-old’s volatile relationship with the public started last year when the singer fell on stage. The incident was recorded by a member of the audience who posted the clip online. However the situation soured after Diljit retaliated by posting a reply to the clip in his own YouTube video in which he slams the people who posted his on stage fall, verbally attacking them through a song. This caused a major backlash with new videos being posted daily blasting the singer for his actions.

As a result, the release of Diljit’s single, 15 Saal and album Urban Pendu were both cancelled. However the single was leaked online and the album has now being prepared for release later in 2012.

Have you heard the leaked single 15 Saal? Do you find the song’s message offensive or do you think Diljit has a valid point to make? Let us know your thoughts in the comments box below.
