The most exemplary members of the Asian community from around the world will be acknowledged once more at the Asian Who’s Who Awards 2011, taking place on Monday 21st November at Dorchester Hotel, Park Lane, London. Now in its 36th year and an institution in itself, the high profile event pays homage to the most influential Asians the world over, who have made a phenomenal contribution to their respective fields and continue to set a shining example to their peers among the global Asian fraternity and beyond.

Filmed by BBC News Television, the coveted Asian of the Year Award will also be presented among the attending host of MP’s, dignitaries, industry leaders, celebrities and VIP’s. The award winner is chosen by an independent panel of eminent advisors, including previous award winners such as Founder and Chairman of Cobra Beer Lord Karan Bilimoria; Baroness Shreela Flather; and Rt Hon Keith Vaz MP. In addition, awards will be presented across the following categories: Asian Leadership in Young Entrepreneur; Asian Leadership in Diversity; Asian Leadership in Community Service; Asian Leadership in Harmony; Asian Leadership in International Business; and Asian Leadership in International Media.

The prestigious award ceremony will coincide with the launch of the annual publication of the Asian Who’s Who International which is regarded as the official UK index of the world’s most inspiring and respected Asian personalities across a host of fields and professions. With the first edition published in 1975, the now annual directory features the most prominent and brightest Asian talents and charts the ascent of the community as it continues to provide shining role models to new generations of Asians who are proving themselves to be assets to their country of residence. The first edition contained 200 entries with the 23rd edition containing over 3,000 entries indicating the significant achievement and progress made by Asians around the world over the years, as they continue to go from strength to strength. The 24th edition, due to be launched in November 2011, will feature more entries than ever before, signifying the level of progress and success being achieved by Asians in contemporary society.

The annual launch of the Asian Who’s Who International publication is an important event for Asian communities around the world. Not only does the weighty book reflect the growing number of achievements by Asians as they continue to contribute to the economic, political, cultural and social activities of their host country, but the event itself presents an opportunity to celebrate the community’s success and for global counterparts to share their stories and inspiration.

One of the most respected leaders of the UK’s ever flourishing Asian community and Founder of Asian Who’s Who International, Mr. Jasbir Singh Sachar says, “It is with great honour and pride that we are about to celebrate the unparalleled accomplishments of a community I am so proud to be a part of and to unveil the 24th edition of Asian Who’s Who International. It all started in 1975. During the 60s and 70s, an influx of Asians from South Asia and Africa arrived in the UK. They made the most of the opportunities they had in their new country. They worked hard in factories, sold newspapers in their corner shops and were not shy of doing any menial job for their survival and to make a decent living in the UK. In fact, these were entrepreneurs and honest people, who made a success in their chosen field of work and continued to break glass ceilings and overcome all challenges along the way.

They started contributing to the economic, political, religious and social activities of their host country, becoming a tangible and intrinsic part of the British economy and life. But there was very little done to recognize them or their achievements. The Asian communities must be identified and recognized for their success and achievements. I am very pleased that our work has continued ever since our launch year, going from strength to strength to reflect the continued celebration of achievements among our communities.”

Jay Sean speaks out in wake of Brits Award snub

VN:F [1.9.10_1130]
Rating: 10.0/10 (1 vote cast)

R&B star Jay Sean has spoken out in the wake of his Brits Award snub after the best selling artist failed to receive a single nomination for the awards show which is regarded as the Oscars of the UK music scene.

Despite Jay’s runaway success in the US, and a string of hits and a bestselling album, the Hounslow born singer didn’t receive a single Brit nomination when the shortlist was announced in London last week.

Speaking in a newspaper interview the Down singer admitted he isn’t a fan of the Brit Awards as he doesn’t believe the event accurately represents the UK music scene calling it “false” and dictated by “politics.”

To back up his opinion, Jay Sean pointed to how the Brit Awards had treated singer Craig David in the past. Despite massive chart success, Craig David was given the cold shoulder by the Brits and never received an award.

The 29-year-old he was a bit put out at not receiving a nomination, but added that he doesn’t need a trophy to prove to himself or anyone else that he’s a success.

Jay made chart history when his single Down made it to number one of the US Billboard chart back in 2009 making him the first UK Urban artist to achieve a number one on the chart.

The singer has gone on to become one of the biggest up and coming artists both in the UK and in the States, working with artists such as Mary J Blige and Lil’ Wayne, but despite all of this success, the singer is yet to achieve a Brit Award Nomination.

Jaz Dhami reveals his new single Putt Jatt Da

VN:F [1.9.10_1130]
Rating: 7.0/10 (3 votes cast)

Up and coming bhangra star Jaz Dhami has revealed his brand new single just in time for Christmas.

The singer is hoping to end the 2010 on a high with the release of his new single, Putt Jatt Da, produced by GV. Jaz has achieved a string of hits throughout the last 12 months, and also beat off tough competition from the likes of Jay Sean and Imran Khan to be named Best Male at this year’s Brit Asia Music Awards.

Music producer GV has collaborated with the vocalist on the new single Putt Jatt Da. The duo decided to work together again after successfully collaborating on an earlier track, Gabroo, which featured on Jaz’s debut self titled album JD.

The new single also provides an excellent showcase for the music producer to show off his skills ahead of the release of his first ever album, From the Group Up, which is scheduled for release in the New Year.

The track Putt Jatt Da has an authentic bhangra vibe to it, but with a modern twist supplied by Jaz’s superb vocals which sound great on the brand new single. The video to accompany the track has also been revealed and features a number of close-ups of both Jaz and GV with the singer wearing a bulletproof vest; no, we’re not sure why either!

Check out Jaz Dhami’s new single and let us know what you think.

A. R Rahman invited to perform at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert

A. R Rahman took to the stage at one of the world’s most prestigious events last week when he performed at the Nobel Peace Prize concert held in Norway.

The singer and composer has become one of the most successful Indian musicians of all time and is now a recognisable face across the world. The Golden Globe and Academy Award winner took time out of his mammoth world tour to perform at the concert last week.

The Nobel Peace Prize 2010 was awarded to Liu Xiaobo, a Chinese human rights activist and writer. However the ceremony was overshadowed by the absence of the winner who was unable to collect his prize as he is currently serving a prison sentence for “inciting subversion of state power.” The political prisoner’s Nobel Peace Prize was symbolically placed on an empty chair during the ceremony in Norway.

A. R Rahman performed two hits songs from the Oscar winning movie Slumdog Millionaire at the concert, accompanying himself on the piano. The Indian singer songwriter was introduced onto the stage by the Hollywood actress Anne Hathaway.

Other high profile artists who were invited to perform at the Nobel peace Prize Concert included Barry Manilow, Elvis Costello, and Florence and the Machine and also a children’s choir at the request of this year’s winner, Liu Xiaobo.

Jay Sean pushes back the release date for new album Freeze Time

VN:F [1.9.10_1130]
Rating: 10.0/10 (4 votes cast)

R&B singer Jay Sean has decided to push back the release of his new album, Freeze Time, until February 2011.

The singer had planned to release the new album by the end of this year, but now fans won’t be able to get their hands on the new record until early 2011.

Two singles from the new forthcoming album have already been released, namely 2012 (It Ain’t the End) and Like This Like That featuring Birdman. The third single release from the new album is already available to hear online, the eagerly anticipated Break Ya Back.

In a recent interview Jay picked out Break Ya Back as one of the tracks on Freeze Time he was most proud of, saying the song features a different kind of sound, one the US fans are yet to hear from him.

Jay performed Break Ya Back at the recent MOBO awards held in Liverpool. The track, which has been produced by renowned music producer Timbaland, is an up tempo number which has been tipped to become a dance floor filler.

No reason has been given for the change to the release date of Jay’s forthcoming album Freeze Time, although it’s been suggested the release date may have been pushed back to avoid the record being overshadowed by other big releases in the run up to Christmas.
