Rajeev B gears up for his new single Hai Soniyeh ft. Nav Sidhu

Top name club DJ Rajeev B is hoping to burst into the music charts once again with a bang this month as his 2nd single, Hai Soniyeh featuring Nav Sindhu, is due for release on Thursday November 24th.

The Kudos Roadshow DJ teamed up with lyricist and vocalist, Nav Sidhu, for the new dance floor filler Hai Soniyeh. With the festive party season just around the corner, there couldn’t be better time to release an upbeat dance floor track such as Hai Soniyeh, so expect to be dancing to this debut single from top British Asian DJ Rajeev B in the coming weeks.

Rajeev B hails from West London and has succeeded in becoming one of the most sought after DJ’s on the Asian club circuit since getting onboard with elite entertainment company, Kudos Music. As someone who knows more than a thing or two about a great dance tune, Rajeev has turned his hand to creating his own music in conjunction with E3UK Records.

The single is taken from Rajeev B’s debut album, The Takeover, which is due for release very soon. The Kudos Music DJ has joined forces with a number of talented singer and producers for his first ever album including Nirmal Sidhu, Navi Sidhu, and Surinder Saini amongst others, so expect big things from Rajeev B’s first record.

Jay Sean wins top gong at The Asian Awards

R&B singer Jay Sean flew in from America especially to pick up one of the biggest awards of the night at the recent Asian Awards ceremony held at the luxury Grosvenor Hotel in central London.

The Down singer was handed the Outstanding Achievement in Music Award at the annual Asian Awards 2011 last week and is reported to have made the trip all the way from the US where he is currently working on his music in order to be present at the prestigious awards ceremony.

Jay Sean, who originally hails from Hounslow, London, said he was honoured to have been chosen for the coveted award, adding that receiving the trophy was very special as it was awarded from his own community.

The Asian Awards 2011 paid tribute to the late Queen singer, Freddy Mercury, and Jay Sean reiterated Mercury’s importance as an artist for singers such as himself as Sean described the Bohemian Rhapsody singer as one of the first vocalists from an ethnic background to have broken into the mainstream music industry so successfully.

Slumdog Millionaire and Oscar winning composer, A R Rahman, won the Outstanding Achievement in Music Award last year, with Jay Sean revealing that he feels extremely humbled to have taken home the same award as the renowned singer and composer.

Lady Gaga performs in India for the first time

US pop singer and international superstar, Lady Gaga, has touched down in India this week and performed a sell out performance to an audience which included some of Bollywood’s biggest names.

The Bad Romance singer gave an amazing performance at Arjun Raampal’s closing party for the masala.org.uk”title=”" >Indian Grand Prix over the weekend, singing some of her biggest hits and also giving an exclusive first performance of her new single, Marry the Night.

Famed for her elaborate stage shows, Lady Gaga didn’t disappoint during her first performance in the country, putting together a special performance incorporating many authentic Indian elements as a fitting tribute to the host country.

The 26-year-old singer had a sitar player flown in especially to accompany her during her gig, and chose to wear a sari by Indian fashion designer, Tarun Tahiliani, although in typical Gaga style she ripped up part of the sari and teamed the look a white bodysuit to create her own unique twist on the traditional Indian look.

The singer declared she’d waited a “lifetime” to perform in India and that she’d initially been asked to sing just three sings during her set, but flatly refused, instead performing a full show including a number of acoustic renditions of her most famous hit songs.

The performance went down a storm with some of the biggest names in Bollywood who’d snapped up tickets to the exclusive party to celebrate the final day of the Grand Prix. Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Bipasha Basu were all reported to have been present to see Lady Gaga perform for the first time ever in India.

Scottish Mela draws in the crowds

This year’s Scottish Mela held in Edinburgh proved a real crowd puller with 26,000 people descending on Leith Links to enjoy the multi cultural two day festival.

The visitor numbers to the 17th annual Edinburgh Mela were up by 4,000 on last year’s attendance figures. Despite worries over the weather, the rain stayed away for most of the weekend, which may have contributed to the increase in visitor numbers this time around.

The event took place over the first weekend of September and featured hundreds of stalls offering food from around the world, also stalls selling everything from clothes, to music and art.

The 26,000 strong-crowd was kept well entertained at Edinburgh’s Mela with BMX performers, break dancers, Asian bhangra stars and a fashion show all gracing the main stage at the two day festival.

Top names from the world of bhangra music and the Asian entertainment scene performed at the Mela including Mumzy Stranger who shared the stage with up and coming performer and prodigy, Junai Kaden. Scotland’s first all-girl bhangra band, Miss Punjabeez also took to the stage at the Mela, as did the popular live band, Des-C, and MOBO Award winner, Raghav.

After such a successful year at Leith Links in the Scottish capital and amazing visitor figures, the Mela is looking forward to making next year’s event even bigger and better.

Panjabi MC has revealed a sneak preview of his latest single from his bestselling album, The Raj. The brand new track, Jatti, is the second single to be released Panjabi MC’s new album.

The video teaser for Jatti gives music fans a taste of what to expect from the full video release expected for later this month. The 30 second long clip suggests that the music producer and rapper has gone with a traditional vibe for the new single as the action focuses on a group of women in authentic Panjabi dress as one of the ladies becomes mesmerized by a man leading a horse.

Expectations are high for the latest single from Panjabi MC as the first single to be released from his new album, Moorni, has already been singled out as one of the hits of the year having received a nomination for Best Single at the Brit Asia Music Awards.

The hit maker attended the recent nominations party for the upcoming Brit Asia Awards after jetting back to the UK following his tour of Australia and Asia. This year’s awards season could be one of the best for Panjabi MC as he received a total of four nominations including the nod for best single as mentioned above, as well as a nomination for the coveted Best Album award for The Raj, and also a nomination for the Best Producer and Best Club DJ trophies.

G-Deep releases his new single Bring it Back

Hit maker G-Deep has just released his brand new single, Bring it Back, the track is already proving popular with music fans and also industry insiders with the single receiving air time on top UK radio station, the BBC Asian Network.

G-Deep collaborates with a number of top artists on his latest offering, Bring it Back, including Senjay and DJ Riz who together with G-Deep make up DNA, also indo-Canadian artist Sunny Leone. The new video for the track is available to view online and features Sunny in full Indian dress, while G-Deep’s Desi Nation of America (DNA) also makes an appearance.

The new single has come to the attention of popular BBC Asian Network DJ, Bobby Friction, who featured the G-Deep single on his radio show. G-Deep’s Punjabi lyrics combined with Sunny’s slick R&B vocals ensures the single stands out from the crowd and is fast becoming a hit both online and on the dance floors up and down the country.

The latest release is the follow up to G-Deep’s Hindi album, O’Billo. G-Deep chose to create a Hindi language album as is the predominant language of South Asia. The album featured a mix of styles including Bollywood inspired tracks mixed with R&B influenced songs.

Shilpa Shetty goes bald for film role

Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty sacrificed her hair for her art when she filmed her first ever English Film, The Desire. However the Big Brother winner didn’t get rid of her famous locks forever, instead opting for prosthetic make up to achieve the bald look for the movie.

The Indo-Chinese collaboration stars Shilpa Shetty opposite Chinese superstar Xia Yu. The masala.org.uk”title=”" >Indian actress plays a danseuse who becomes a monk in what is billed as one woman’s journey of discovery.

Although the film has been in production since 2008, it will receive its premiere later this month at the opening of the New York Film Festival. The actress is expected to walk the red carpet at the first official screening of The Desire in America on August 24th.

The Desire is due to be shown at various film festivals around the world before being released in India and China initially.

The movie has been something of a family affair for Bollywood favourite Shilpa as her mother, Sunnanda Shetty, produced the film in which her daughter stars.

 Shilpa and her husband Raj Kundra have been enjoying an extended holiday for the last few months, although the actress and businesswoman revealed in a recent interview that she’s looking forward to getting back to Mumbai to start work on her new production company. The 36-year-old actress also denied the recent rumours in the press that she is pregnant, however she did reveal that starting a family is high up on her list of priorities.

Jay Sean to headline the London Mela 2011

Jay Sean has been announced as the headline act at this year’s London Mela due to take place on Sunday September 2nd.

BBC Asian Network presenter, Tommy Sandhu, revealed the news of Jay’s scheduled appearance at the Mela live on air. Much to the delight of Jay Sean fans, the singer is due to perform a 45 minute long set.

The performance at Gunnersby Park in Ealing will be the first time Jay has taken to the stage at an Asian event in three years.

The performance at the London Mela 2011 in Ealing will be something of a homecoming gig for Jay Sean who was born and brought up in nearby Hounslow. As well as performing some the biggest hits which helped him make his name both here and in the US, Jay will also treat the audience to a number of exclusive performances of songs from his forthcoming album.

In addition to the main stage which will host some of the biggest names in Asian entertainment, the Mela also offers a platform for emerging artists to showcase their talents on the BBC Introducing stage. The full line up of artists due to perform on this stage is due shortly.  

If you can’t make the London Mela, don’t despair as the BBC Asian Network will be broadcasting live from the popular event between 2pm and 9pm.

As well as the hugely popular Jay Sean, other top names who will be keeping the crowds entertained on the main stage at the London Mela include Jazzy B, Garry Sandhu, Bollywood singer Ash King and Mumzy Stranger.

Jay Sean’s Freeze Time album gets digital release date

The eagerly anticipated new album from R&B star Jay Sean has been given its digital release date for July 5th meaning fans of the UK born singer can download the album from this week.

Pre-orders for the album are being taken from all major retailers as well so if you haven’t had a chance to download the new record yet, it’s still available to pre-order so you’ll be the first to get your hands on a hard copy when it’s released.

The album, Freeze Time, is released off Cash Money / Universal Republic record labels and features a great mix of R&B, pop and dance tunes to keep you on your feet and dancing. The record is the follow up to Jay’s smash hit album, All or Nothing, and so big things are expected from this new release.

Music fans will already be familiar with a number of the tracks on the album including 2012 (It Ain’t the End) featuring Nicki Minaj which was a hit in the US and the UK, and also the second song to be released off Freeze Time, Hit the Lights featuring Lil’ Wayne. The most recent single to be released off the Freeze Time album is Like This Like That which has been well received by music fans so far.

Bhangra street parties planned to celebrate the royal wedding tomorrow

The Asian communities in the UK are planning to celebrate the royal wedding tomorrow with organised bhangra style street parties in thousands of streets across the country.

Southall in London are planning a special street celebration on Clarence Street as this is where members of Kate Middleton’s family live. A party complete with Bollywood dancers, Asian drummers, bhangra music and masala.org.uk”title=”" >Indian singers has been planned for the street in Southall with the royal connection.

Similar bhangra style events such as the one taking place in the London borough have been organised in Bradford, Manchester, Birmingham and Leicester so wherever you’re planning to spend tomorrow, there’s bound to be an Indian style celebration happening on a street near you.

5,500 street closures have been requested in streets across the country on April 29th, 825 of which have been requested in the London area.

The street party is a quintessentially British tradition and one which local authorities are encouraging residents to participate in as research has shown that on average, you’ll meet 8 new neighbours while attending a local street party. These types of events also boast a high attendance record with 85% of those living on the street where the party is held, turning out to enjoy the festivities.
