The singer Diljit Dosanjh is no stranger to controversy however his latest single which was leaked online, 15 Saal, is proving particularly contentious as a women’s rights group staged a march to the performer’s home to protest over the message the singer is portraying in his single.
Diljit’s new single, 15 Saal, which means 15 years in Punjabi, discusses the loss of innocence in young women and how modern teenage girls are more likely than ever to grow up too quickly and get involved in drink, drugs and boys at a young age.
While Diljit fans believe the singer has a valid point to make about the way society is changing and how this is having a negative effect in young women, others believe the Punjabi singer is portraying teenage girls in a derogatory light, which has lead to the recent protest at Diljit Dosanjh’s home.
The women’s group acting under the banner, Istri Jagriti Manch, marched to the Punjabi singer’s home last month and gathered outside the property to hold a rally. The women were protesting over Diljit’s use of indecent language and remarks towards females in his music. A member of the singer songwriter’s family came out to apologise to the women’s group.
The 28-year-old’s volatile relationship with the public started last year when the singer fell on stage. The incident was recorded by a member of the audience who posted the clip online. However the situation soured after Diljit retaliated by posting a reply to the clip in his own YouTube video in which he slams the people who posted his on stage fall, verbally attacking them through a song. This caused a major backlash with new videos being posted daily blasting the singer for his actions.
As a result, the release of Diljit’s single, 15 Saal and album Urban Pendu were both cancelled. However the single was leaked online and the album has now being prepared for release later in 2012.
