Britney Spears is the latest pop star to embrace the Indian music scene as we can reveal that the American singer’s latest single, Till the World End, has undergone a bhangra makeover.

The new single, Till the World Ends, which is released off the 28-year-old pop star’s new album, Femme Fatale, has been remixed with a desi flavour courtesy of Canadian bhangra band, Culture Shock.

According to reports, Britney’s record label, Jive Label Group, wanted to build bridges with Asian music fans and so took the decision to present Britney’s latest single with a desi influence so as to appeal to Indian audiences.

Culture Shock’s Baba Khan said they wanted to create a “desi adrenaline rush” with the remix version of Britney’s single by adding traditional Indian instruments such as dhoki, tumbi and dhol beats. The remix also samples a number of desi folk songs including Larra Lappa and Pind Sunita.

The 28-year-old singer is obviously over the moon with the bhangra remix of her single as she took to Twitter to urge her fans to check out the track saying “I LOVE it!!”

However, Britney is the only American pop starlet to be taking inspiration from India for her music. Last month, Bad Romance singer Lady Gaga revealed a desi remix of her latest hit record, Born This Way.

Lady Gaga’s popular single was remixed by Indian music producers, Salim-Suleiman, who introduced some sitar and dhol beats to create a desi inspired version of the dance floor filler.

Almost 4,000 people attended the Asian Mela in Plymouth over the weekend

Plymouth celebrated its first ever Asian Mela over the weekend with people coming from all over the area to enjoy the colourful festival.

The Mela which celebrates South Asian arts and culture, offered a range of entertainment from local performers to world renowned professionals.

The event was organised by the Plymouth South Asian Society who say they hope to build on the success of this year’s event to create an even bigger Mela in 2011.

The Mela attracted crowds of between 3,000 – 4,000 people say the organisers. The free event offered a range of dance and musical performances, as well as food stalls offering traditional South Asian cuisine.

Among the performers who took to the stage over the weekend for Plymouth’s first ever Mela were professional dance artists from Akademi, bhangra singers and musicians, plus classical Indian musicians Bipin Jani and Kiranpal Singh, and there was also a puppet show for the children.

Pupils from local schools across the Plymouth area also performed a traditional Bollywood dance routine during the Mela, which was one of the highlights of the event.

Spurred on by the runaway success of Plymouth’s first Mela, the organisers are already plotting a more elaborate event for next year and are currently looking for sponsorship to help develop the festival.
