Kuly from RDB passes away; huge blow to bhangra music and bollywood

Soul musician and singer of popular Brit-Asian bhangra group RDB (Rhythm Dhol Bass), Kuly Ral, has passed away under causes suspected to be cancer. The Punjabi DJ production team that brought together brothers Kuly, Manj, and Surj, travelled extensively to bring their music to the world. The brothers were best known for blending western genres with traditional Punjabi beats and vocals and were behind such popular chartbusters as Shera Di Kaum Punjabi from ‘Speedy Singhs’, Yamla Pagla Deewana, and Aloo Chaat. Their latest Bollywood song, Sadi Gali from the film ‘Tanu weds Manu’, was an instant hit amongst the Indian youth and continues to be played in nightclubs around the country.

Kuly played a large role in driving RDB to conquer both the UK and the Indian bhangra industry. The hip-hop bhangra band that collaborated with international artist Snoop Dogg and Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar, will sorely miss the charismatic singer who was an inspiration to many British Asian musicians.

Kuly’s death is a huge blow to the Punjabi music industry and has affected celebrities and fans alike. Bollywood star Akshay Kumar tweeted: “Just heard about Kuly from RDB`s sudden demise. Still reeling from the shock of the news. RIP.” Svee Kaur Bains, an RDB fan from Vancouver, said: “So sad and what a tragic end. I hope it draws attention to the illness. May God rest his soul and help his family. 2012 has lost too many music greats!”

Kuly’s death comes in the wake of recent plans by RDB to open a studio in India. The band had earlier expressed its desire to be more involved in making music for Bollywood. Band member Surj said: “Bollywood market has always opened its doors for different kinds of music and our band’s sound was adored. I must say Bollywood is one of the biggest markets for our kind of music. Our music goes out to places where we would not expect it to reach.”

Here’s another amazing track/video from the RDB brothers:

Shah Rukh Khan in hot water for smoking during IPL cricket match

He may be a Bollywood movie star, but Shah Rukh Khan certainly isn’t above the law as events this week proved as the actor has had a legal complaint filed against him after he was seen smoking during an ILP cricket match last weekend.

Shah Rukh Khan was seen openly smoking during Saturday’s IPL match between the actor’s team, Kolkata Knight Riders and the Rajasthan Royals. Khan was seen smoking by millions of TV viewers as the cameras cutaway from the action on the pitch to the crowd, catching the Bollywood star puffing away on a cigarette from the stands at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium.

A nationwide smoking ban prohibiting anyone from smoking in a public place came into force throughout India in 2008, while an all-out ban prohibiting the advertisement of cigarettes was introduced in the country back in 2000.

A complaint against Shah Rukh Khan has been filed on behalf of Jaipur Cricket Academy director, Anand Singh Rathore, after the actor was seen smoking at the recent cricket match. The complaint also highlights possible failings of security staff at the stadium who were required to search all spectators entering the ground and remove items such as cigarettes.

The complaint is being assessed by the courts, once the matter has been considered they’ll decided whether further action will be taken against the actor or the security staff at the stadium.

Bollywood plans day long strike to protest over new tax proposal

Bollywood will come to a standstill on February 23rd as the industry is planning a complete shutdown to protest over new government proposals to levy a new service tax on the film making industry. Those who oppose the proposal say the extra tax will have a negative effect on Indian film makers, squeezing film budgets even further.

The Bollywood strike will take place on February 23rd for the entire day, although the strike could be extended if there’s enough support for the cause. The Film Federation of India (FFI) declared the nationwide shut down, while the industry is waiting to see if the Film Producers Guild will join the strike, which would provide a big boost to the cause.

However not everyone supports the strike, filmmaker Retan Jain is one in particular who insists that the strike will only succeed in losing money for the Indian film industry. Jain believes that the best way to tackle the central government proposal to impose another tax on movies made in India is to call a meeting with the finance ministry to address the proposal head on.

Other well known faces in Bollywood support the strike whole heartedly, including Ramesh Sippy who is calling for indefinite strike to ensure the protest does not go unnoticed. Sippy believes the tax would mean an extra burden on the Indian film industry which is already the subject of heavy taxes.

Do you support the strike? Or do you think the Bollywood movie industry should pay more in tax? Let us know your thoughts in the comments box below.

Is desi singer Raghav about to break into Bollywood?

Urban desi singer Raghav is about to break into the world of Bollwood; that’s if his most recent tweets are anything to go by.

The 30-year-old vocalist took to the micro blogging website earlier this month to share his recent news with fans as he wrote, “Just recorded my first Bollywood track”.

Although the secretive singer refused to reveal any more information, leaving his followers hanging as to what film the song will accompany, he did drop a slight hint saying that the track includes the word “hey”, however that doesn’t really narrow it down.

While Raghav seems to have turned his attentions to the Bollywood scene in recent times, the Indo-Canadian vocalist has been wowing his fans with the first three tracks off his new album, the Phoenix, which have been released over the past few months.

The reaction to the 30-year-old’s most recent releases has been very positive, but whether The Phoenix can top the success of Raghav’s debut album, Storyteller, which sold 1.3 million records worldwide, remains to be seen.

No release date for Raghav’s Bollywood debut has been revealed as yet. Are you excited to hear Raghav’s first ever Bollywood track? Do you think he has a successful career ahead of him in the film industry? Let us know your thoughts in the comments box below.
