The ninth annual Boston Bhangra Competition will take place on Saturday, 10 November 2012, bringing in teams from across the United States and Canada. North America’s best bhangra teams will battle it out at the world renowned Orpheum Theatre in one of the US’ biggest cultural competitions.
This year, the competition will see 12 bhangra teams compete for top honours in hopes to be crowned the Boston Bhangra Champions. Since the event first started in 2004, the Boston Bhangra Competition has established itself as the country’s leading bhangra contest. In its eight years, the show has received strong support not just from the Boston South Asian community but from across the US and has sold out performances with more than 3,000 people in attendance.
The competition is organised by Boston Bhangra, a society dedicated to cultural understanding and mentorship for youths through the common thread of bhangra. Bhangra is a folk dance from the state of Punjab and parts of Pakistan. It has often been compared to a fusion of hip hop and cheerleading with a cultural twist. Bhangra has been integrated into many hip hop and reggae songs, and is a global upcoming foreign dance form.
Today, bhangra has taken on many definitions and commands an important part in many people’s lives for a variety of reasons. With the Boston Bhangra Competition and a range of other events, the Boston Bhangra group aim to harness this positive energy, give back to the community and grow as individuals and as part of a larger group.
This year, the Boston Bhangra Competition will host special guest performances by Bhangra superstar Saini Surinder from India and Gupsy Aujla from the UK. These are the people behind bhangra chartbusters like Bhangra, Mundran, Rangeele, Dupatta, Desi Peeni and many more.
The Boston Bhangra Competition will be broadcast internationally via television, newspaper, radio, and the internet, making it the largest South Asian promoted event in the northeast!
